Home gardeners and landscape professionals - learn the latest ways to reduce water use in landscapes by taking online classes or attending a class in your area.  Classes are free.  They covers the basics of irrigation systems, watering and fertilizing, basic landscape design and plant identification.

Residential classes are usually held weekly on consecutive Saturdays and weekday evenings.

To attend a class in person, you must schedule classes through your Metropolitan Water Agency. Use the zip code calculator below to find the member agency that represents your area.  Click here to see available classes.

California Friendly Landscape Training Professional:

(Offered in English or Spanish)

This course is directed towards landscape maintenance personnel. It consists of four 4-hour consecutive classes in landscape water management. Each class builds on principles presented in the preceding class. Each class consists of a slide show with lecture and demonstration. Every participant receives a bound booklet for the course.

Irrigation Principles & Adjustments and Repair   (3.5 hours)
  • Types of irrigation systems
  • Sprinkler layout, components, selection and spacing
  • Common sprinkler problems
Irrigation System Troubleshooting (3.5 hours)
  • Irrigation system failures solutions
  • Practical training in the use of electrical troubleshooting equipment
Professional Class 3
Professional Class 4
Controller Programming (3.5 hours)
  • Basic and advanced controller (Irrigation controllers are provided for in-class usefeatures)
  • Temperature/seasonal changes
Irrigation Scheduling (3.5 hours)
  • When to irrigate
  • How much water to apply
  • Soil types, water-holding capacity and irrigation frequency
  • Use of ‘scheduler’ to estimate irrigation run times to eliminate complicated calculations.

 

California Friendly Landscape Training Plant Class:

(Offered in English or Spanish - 6 hours)

The Plant Class is designed to give landscape professionals information in plant identification, characteristics, and water use requirement guidelines for over 40 common landscape plant species. Also included is general landscape water use information. The class consists of a slide presentation, two exercises and an optional garden walk-through. A class booklet is included with the class and includes color photos of common landscape plants and maintenance information. This class can be taught in one day or split into two 3-hour classes.
